Yesterday afternoon I mowed my lawn for for the first time this year. The smell of the fresh cut grass was a sign that spring is actually here. After finishing up the outdoor chores, I was able to enjoy the other sign that spring is here.
While watching Tanaka serve up taters for New York and watching Bumgarner hit taters for San Francisco was enjoyable, Sunday wasn’t the real opening day.
Today is Opening Day.
24 teams will take the field today. 24 teams will start the 2017 season today with game 1 of 162. 162 is a big number, so why do we care so much about 1? Will a win or loss on April 3 mean much for a team’s success this year? Maybe, but probably not.
So why do we care so much about number 1?
We care so much about number 1 because Opening Day means that Baseball is Back. Opening Day means that we now get to enjoy 7 months of the National Pastime. Opening Day means that we can now head to the ballpark for an afternoon showcase on a warm Sunday afternoon. Opening Day means the National Anthem and “Take Me Out to the Ballgame”.
Opening Day means life is good.
Today, life is good.
