Let’s face it, even when the Big 12 decides to expand by another 2-4 teams, Texas and blOwU will ultimately be the faces of the conference. Baylor is looking increasingly like a flash in the pan. (Sucks for whoever bought that new stadium) TCU will forever be the bridesmaid, but never the bride. Texas Tech gives up like, I don’t know, a MILLION yards per game on “defense”. The list goes on and on throughout the conference mid-level and bottom feeder teams. Yes there will be years like the last few when any program will go through a rebuild or restructure, but the big 12 will go how Texas and Oklahoma go. If one leaves, so will the other and the Big 12 will be no more.
So this brings me to the point of today’s entry. The expectations are HUUGE (Donald Trump voice) when it comes to the Longhorn’s season. The women’s volleyball team, men’s basketball team, swim, and golf teams are perineal powerhouses, but this is Texas. In the state of Texas football only comes in 2nd to…… I’m not sure, but when I think of it I’ll let you know. These lofty expectations from the burnt orange faithful are sometimes unrealistic, but consistent none the less. It’s championship or bust! I myself have only seen one national championship in my lifespan, but if I had a nickel for every year somebody thought UT would hoist the trophy I’d have….. 32 x’s .05 cents……. Whatever that comes to. I’m here to talk about football, not elementary math. (Which seems to be becoming increasingly difficult every year that I’m further removed from elementary)
The pressure on this young Longhorns team is immense following the Notre Dame victory and UTEP blowout. Whereas an 8-4 or 9-3 season would’ve been acceptable by most logical fans before the 1st snap a week ago, now anything shy of 10 wins feels like it would be a letdown. I don’t want to take a lot of your time commenting on the UTEP game, but here’s a quick breakdown. The Longhorns scored early. The offense sputtered in the 2nd quarter. Then we scored a bunch in the 2nd half. The defense looked solid, but had some costly penalties. Overall, we beat an opponent handily that we should have beaten by a few more points. This is a young team still that’s growing up before our eyes from week to week.
While I predicted the win over Notre Dame, THIS is the week that we’ll begin to see the season come into shape. We go on the road for the first time this year. Cal is coming off of a loss and still has an elite NFL arm at the QB position. If the Horns look past Cal towards the beginning of conference play and a back to back on the road against Ok State and the Sooner, then we could be in big trouble before Buechele and gang realize what time zone they’re in. I’m thinking Srong and the rest of the coaching staff are preaching about taking it one week at a time, but how often to you listen to an authoritative figure when you were 18-22 years old?!?
Texas is currently favored by right around a touchdown. Do I think they’ll win? Yes. Do I think they’ll be ranked in the top 10 following this coming game? Yes! But stranger things have happened and I might look like a total idiot after Saturday. Either way, my bold prediction for the week…… Texas wears the famed “Storm Trooper” white uniforms and unlike the Star Wars series, defeats the rebel forces. (Cal Golden Bears) Offense scores somewhere around 40. Defense will give up some points but will create 3 turnovers and will have 6 sacks. I’m not sure how “bold” that prediction is, but if it holds up don’t forget that you #hearditherefirst
